Sustainable Living and Plastic Free Alternatives

Your footprints make our future

When, Why and Where

I was 6 months pregnant and decided to open a plastic free shop in Harare. Waste Me Not opened late 2018 with the vision to promote environmental awareness and offer plastic free alternatives. Our mission to reduce waste pollution in the environment by using plastic free and sustainable solutions had been a personal passion for many years prior and now it was time introduce the passion to the public. So my husband and I decided to start a very small intimate shop which is known as Waste Me Not, for short we call it WMN. At the time of opening it was not clear on how the concept would be received within Zimbabwe which is why we thought starting a small outlet was best. Our mindset is that, we didn’t need to go big to be seen or heard. We only used social media and word of mouth to advertise our grand opening because we didn’t want to generate any extra paper waste. September 4th is when our doors opened and we were so glad to see so many positive and interested faces walk through our doors. Since then all business has still been from word of mouth and social media, mostly Facebook.
Being eco- friendly is easier said than being. Most of us has heard the term “eco-friendly” but what does it really mean and how can we really be as they say “eco-friendly”? This was another driving factor for launching WMN. We wanted to make people understand that they didn’t have to immediately change everything in their life at once to be someone who cared about the environment. It must be understood that our smaller actions will have more meaningful long term benefits. This is how WMN gained its missions momentum, being a safe place for people from all walks of life wanting to make any changes in their current lifestyle to become “eco-friendly”.
But this is when we found that many people were still unaware of the detrimental environmental effects of single use plastics after disposal. Many people didn’t realize how much we all contribute to a global problem and this is when our customers wanted to seek alternatives and learn more. So by offering some fantastic plastic free alternatives at WMN such as bamboo, sugarcane, cornstarch and other sustainable options, allowed people to physically see what could substitute plastic or actions they could practice at home to become more aware of their plastic waste footprint. After-all “It’s just 1 straw said 8 billion people”. This saying can go for any single use plastic item, because on a cumulative scale our waste as a whole is a big problem. This is how we knew that people were keen to try new products and start making some lifestyle and mindset changes.

WMN is a shop which strives to combine traditional, natural, reusable, sustainable, modern and useful products, (all plastic free) under one roof. We aim to become a leader in waste free and plastic free packaging and products by encouraging our customers to take part in our refill stations which include spices, flours, coffees, teas and cleaning products. Don’t forget to bring your jars for filling! We even offer sustainable and reusable everyday necessities like straws, menstrual hygiene replacements, biodegradable kitchen and body scrub pads and so much more.
Our shop is small, it’s quirky but it’s original and a first of its kind in Zimbabwe. It’s a shop full of passion and the strong desire to spread the word of choosing sustainable choices. When you enter WMN we really want people to come into the reality of how serious our contribution of waste is to the environmental pollution problem. Our continual documentaries playing on the mounted TV offer the sad evidence of how plastic has become such a threat to life as we know it. The connection of what we use, how we use it, when we use it and why we use it are all questions we want people to start reflecting on. Because, a lot of positive eco-friendly changes in our life can be free of charge.
We are not perfect. We are just regular folks trying to make a difference in reducing the plastic waste in our environment. We are definitely still learning and continually working towards our goal of a zero plastic waste. We look forward to sharing our journey, products and insight of how to be as waste free as you can be. We are in this together because there is no planet B.

Sustainable living

Sustainability is a word that many of us may not really understand. We may think we understand because we hear it so often but have you really taken the time to understand its true meaning? For example there are so many terms such as biodegradable, compostable, eco-friendly and sustainability that we tend to overlook that each term has a specific meaning or do we just assume that it all means the same thing? And what is most important?

For now let’s try and get a better understanding of what sustainable means, because that is what life is all about. Can our life be sustained by what we do, what we eat and what we want with what the earth has to offer? I would give sustainable the equation of rate/time because it means the rate it can be maintained over time. Sustainable Living is another reference name we use in conjunction with Waste Me Not because that’s what we are trying to encourage and promote; sustainable living. This to us means a lifestyle which you could feel comfortable in maintaining while making environmentally friendly choices along the way, common consumables we often use that can be replaced with sustainable alternatives. It’s about an environmental balance between human and earth. Remember we need this planet more than it needs us.
